Tauranga Fishing Report 18th August 2016

ROLY’s Fishing Report – 18th August 2016

–Hauraki, The Hits, News Talk, Radio Sport —

The recent 2m swell has really stirred up the inshore fishing. Now these rips and currents caused by the swells tend to shift sand and expose food like worms, crab, and shellfish to the predatory snapper and gurnard, which can make for some good fishing. Add to this the whitebait running along the coast and all elements are there right now for good softbaiting in the shallows.

The best areas are along Matakana Island and Papamoa East and Maketu.  The tell tail sign of course is bird activity, where you will have kahawhai and snapper pushing bait to the surface where birds like gannets and terns can grab an easy feed, so in short target the birds.

Commercial reports indicate that this year’s albacore run has been solid with 15kg plus fish being plentiful. Usually these fish will push in over the coming weeks which will be perfect timing for the Mount Motorcycles Albacore Hapuka Tournament on the 10th & 11th September.  Tickets are on sale from the Tauranga Sport Fishing Club and tournament details online at www.tsfc.co.nz.
